Postcard Project Update - Friday, October 01, 2004

Hi Guys:

Well here we go!

While Will is busy updating the site with moms info, I wanted to ask you guys for some ideas and help. I really want my mom to be the most successfully mom thus far, so I want to do some above and beyond marketing of the site during my stint here. Do you have any ideas or knowledge of free online classifieds we can post at (ie:www.craigslist.org), or any other ideas of places to post or advertise? Do you know anyone with a blog? If you link us to someone elses sight, dont forget to let us know either so we can check it out. Also, tell anyone and everyone you know. Lets see how much we can spread this through word of mouth as well.

Let me just say as well...Celeste and Betty...nice to meet you, maybe someday all the postcard moms can get together for tea. That would be cool huh??

Just got back to chatting with the complex managers, they are stoked, I thought it might be a little struggle to get them to go for it, but they were as excited as me, maybe a tad more. So now we have the green light from all sides!

Now get to cutting your fabric square and writing your note...lets be ready to send Monday!

Alright...Go team!

Love,
Rick

Our Mom has a name. Kay, or as Rick says, Her brother calls her Katy so lets use that sometimes to throw her off... I'll be updating the 'About Mom' page this weekend with loads of trivia about Kay.

We've also decided on the first item - a 4 inch (or so) square of fabric for a quilt. Rick would like you to attach a note to her about the special memories you and her have attached to it. (ie. I thought of you when I found a scrap of this dress I wore for our fourth grade picture day! Man, this thing was ugly!)

Get your stuff ready over the weekend. By Monday, you'll have the October newsletter and Kay's address. Don't get the newsletter? Sign up, then!

When writing your note, you may want to mention 'Celeste' and 'Betty' in passing...

Lastly, remember that you can send a postcard anytime.

Well kids, we have a winner.

It looked like Aly's Mom or Julianna's sister were going to be neck and neck, then along came a few votes for Ricks Mom, and soon it was a landslide.

Rick, you're the winner!

Stay tuned to the blog for updates over the weekend. If we can get it together, we'll have an address and item ready to go for you on Monday.

Postcard Project Update - Wednesday, September 29, 2004

I'll betcha thought I forgot... here they are in no particular order

Rose's stepmom:
has no access to the Internet, but would probably love getting weird crap from all over. My dad is a huge practical joker and any way he can get Patsy, he's in, so he'd definitely be on our side. They are very, ahem, interesting and diffrent kind of folks, my parents, so let me know if patsy's in the running. She lives in North Carolina and Florida (aka The Weather Channel's Hurricane Cone of Doom) but we speak on the phone several times a week.

Rick says:
I would like to nominate my mother in law to be the next victim. She is 55 years old, divorced, and recently moved by herself to a "retirement community" although she is far from retired. She doesnt have many friends, or much family and although we don't live that far we rarely have the opportunity to spend much time with her. I really feel like this would be just the thing to pick her up, as lately it has really seemed like she has been down. In the community she lives in there are mailboxes that are different from the addresses of the patrons, so there wouldn't be the hassle there was this time with the PO Box, as it would be entirely safe to send to her address (I would just need to notify the complex manager). I participated in the sending in both sessions so far, and I tried in the last e-bay auction to win, but it got to rich for my blood right at the end.

I would be an excellent facilitator with updates and notes and I could really make the third run the best yet.

Julianna comes along with this idea:
My baby sister (well she is 18!) just left for school 8 hours away from here. She is now in London Ontario and getting a tad homesick. She does not know about this site and adores mail and has a great sense of humour. I know she would LOVE this prank- only problem is she is not a mom. Maybe we could do "Postcards for Undergrad Student" or something along those lines, I think it would be hilarious, and would promise to keep everyone updated every few days.
Let me know what everyone thinks of this idea! I think it would be a fun chance of pace!

(Others have suggested that we send Julianna's sis things as if she was a mom...)

Jen L comments:
I'm pondering my sister.. I don't think I told her about this site but I can't seriously think about it until after my wedding (8 days now!) But come October I would do anything if I can figure this out and plan it right and get the right people involved in it so it could be pulled off.

Aly adds:
I'd be willing to nominate my mom. She's 65, lives in Las Cruces, NM, and was diagnosed with CML (Chronic Meyeloid Leukemia) last year. She's in remission now, and has a very positive outlook on life. She loves to cook (so sending a recipe would be cool), loves to crochet (loved the 16.5 inches of yarn idea), loves to travel (espeically to GA to see her 3 grown kids and grandbabies) and would be a great sport about it all. Although I don't live close enough to keep tabs, we talk and e-mail regularly and she has a "significant other" that would be happy to relay the info and reactions to me. If you haven't picked anyone by October 1, please consider my mom. She'd be the perfect target, um victim, um candidate. You've had midwest, east, try the desert southwest!

Postcard Project Update - Tuesday, September 28, 2004

I'm a self-proclaimed Internet junkie. I'm probably online around 12 hours a day average. So I have a special place in my heart for people who read blogs (mine in particular) on a regular basis. Updates or not - its good to have 'friends' stopping by to see if anything new is going on.

So tomorrow I'm going to post a few letters I received from candidate-electors. I'm going to let you my friends vote on the 'winner'. This will be very unscientific and unplannned. And if my wife is reading she may flip out. I love to plan.

Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance - oh she loves to hear that.

Anyway tomorrow you will see a list. You vote (in the comments) and the winner (if possible) can start next Monday. Cool? Cool.
